Curtis Earle Lang

Curtis Earle Lang (January 20, 1937 – December 17, 1998) was a Canadian poet, artist, photographer, seaman, inventor and entrepreneur.
== Early life ==

Curtis Earle Lang was born in Vancouver, Canada. When he was 15, Lang met the poet, Al Purdy, at a science fiction club meeting. Despite a nearly twenty-year gap in age, they became friends. Lang persuaded Purdy to join him in seeking out the novelist, Malcolm Lowry, who was living in a shack on a North Vancouver beach. Malcolm described the two as "wild and memorable poets" and wrote positively about Lang's poetry.〔Sherrill E. Grace, ed., ''Sursum Corda! The Collected Letters of Malcolm Lowry, Volume Two'': 1946–57, ed. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1997.〕 Lang was already being published in Canadian literary journals.〔Curt Lang, “On the Death of Dylan Thomas,” ''Canadian Poetry Magazine'', Winter, 1953–1954.〕〔Curt Lang, "History Lesson on Point Grey," ''The Canadian Forum'', July 1955, p 87.〕 Al Purdy wrote several reminiscences of Lang and Lowry.〔Al Purdy, ''Reaching for the Beaufort Sea'', Madeira Park: Harbour Publishing,1993.〕〔Al Purdy, “Lowry: A Memoir” ''Books in Canada'', vol. 3, no. 1 (January / February 1974), pp. 3–4.〕〔Al Purdy,“A Memoir of Malcolm Lowry,” ''Canada Month'', September 1962.〕 The intellectually stimulating and sometimes testy relationship that Lang and Purdy had is also chronicled in their correspondence.〔For extracts, see, Claudia Cornwall, ''At the World's Edge: Curt Lang's Vancouver, 1937-1998'', Saltspring Island: Mother Tongue Publishing Ltd., 2011, pp. 21-33.〕
In his twenties, Lang was a beat. He was friends with many in Vancouver's creative community―poets Peter Trower, John Newlove, bill bissett, and Jamie Reid; artists Fred Douglas, Jock Hearne, David Marshall,〔Monica Ullman, ''The Life and Art of David Marshall'', vol. 1, The Unheralded Artists of BC series. Salt Spring Island: Mother Tongue Publishing, 2008.〕 and Roy Kiyooka; and musicians Gregg Simpson and Al Neil〔Jamie Reid, "Curt Lang," Bill Jeffries, Glen Lowry, Jerry Zaslove, eds.,''Unfinished Business: Photographing Vancouver’s Streets, 1955 to 1985'', Presentation House and west coast line, 2005, pp.80-83.〕
